ATTACHMENT TO NARRATIVE DESRIPTION OF GHANA LIBRARY PROJECT ALSO KNOWN AS (NANA ASANTEWAAH LIBRARY AND EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS CENTER)
A. MULTIPLE FUNCTIONS OF THE LIBRARY AND EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS CENTER
To fully serve its targeted communities in and around the Kumasi Metropolitan Area, and to advance learning and teaching in Ghana, the Nana Asantewaah Library and Educational Videos Center will perform 4 major functions:
The educational videos will serve 3 purposes: 1. Give students new and useful knowledge and information. 2. Strengthen student’s areas of academic weakness. 3. Reinforce subjects and topics that students already know.
As learning tools, educational videos broaden and deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of academic topics and current issues; they enhance learning and teaching. They are indispensable learning and teaching tools that are presently not used at all in Ghanaian schools, colleges and universities. This is a serious gap in our educational system.
PROVIDER OF LIBRARY-BASED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES To enhance and support learning, teaching and academic performance in Ghana, the Library and Educational Videos Center will provide the following library-based educational programs:
Homework assistance for Elementary School, Junior Secondary School (J.S.S) and Senior High School (S.H.S) students.
To receive and respond to patrons’ call to the library for answers to academic and non-academic questions.
To receive and respond to patrons’ calls to the library for general local, national and international information and news of interest to patrons. If necessary, the library staff member in charge of the Telephone Hotline may also provide responses to patrons in writing or by text message.
PROVIDER OF LIBRARY-BASED SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROGRAMS AND SERVICES To reduce unemployment and under-employment and to promote job creation the Library and Educational Videos Center will provide socio-economic programs and training including:
Pre-Employment Training (PETP)
PROVIDER OF INFORMATION ON A WIDE RANGE OF IMPORTANT LOCAL AND NATIONAL HEALTH, ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL ISSUES To promote good health and wellness and longevity and to reduce mortality in Ghana, the Library and Educational Video Center will conduct research, give seminars, organizes lectures, gather, disseminate and share information on a wide range of issues of local and national importance including:
Physical health, mental health and wellness; good nutrition and diet, diet-related diseases like diabetes and obesity; exercise and stress reduction; personal hygiene and dental health; alcoholism, substance abuse and dangers of smoking.
Women and gender issues like income and pay disparity; sexual harassment and crime against women; domestic violence; women’s physical and mental health; maternal mortality, infertility, ante-natal, neo-natal and peri-natal care and depression.
Children issues like child abuse and child neglect; child labour, child kidnapping; sex crimes against children; pornography; teenage pregnancies and teenage prostitution; nutrition, diet and exercise; children’s diet-related diseases like juvenile diabetes, obesity and bolemia; juvenile mental health, stress and depression; school dropout and juvenile delinquency; forced marriages and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
B. LIBRARY PROGRAMS AND SERVICES PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE
Planned library-based and library driven programs and services include the following;
Mobile Library Service for sick children in hospitals, handicapped and physically challenged persons living at home and students living in remote villages and communities; reading to sick children in hospitals and at home; initiative to collect audio books and tapes for the blind and vision-impaired persons.
Workshops for grant writers and writers of Request For Proposals (RFPs)
Workshops on Program Planning and Program Evaluation
Preparatory statistics, research and demography classes and tutorials for Senior High School (SHS) completers and graduates who are about to enter universities, colleges and technical schools.
Remedial statistics, research and demography classes and tutorials for university, college and technical school students.
C. EVALUATION OF EFFECTIVENESS OF LIBRARY-BASED PROGRAMS AND SERVICES Evaluation of Library-based and library-driven programs and services will be an integral and important part of the functions performed by the Library and Educational Videos Center. To achieve this objective, the center will conduct evaluation research to assess the effectiveness of its programs and services on the following:
Junior Secondary Schools (J.S.S) and Senior High Schools (S.H.S) tests and examination performance
Graduation and completion rates
